1. INTRODUCTION

One of ALCOM's target areas is to improve the utilization of small water bodies to benefit local communities. A pilot project was agreed with Lesotho, to be implemented and managed by the Fisheries Section, Ministry of Agriculture. The project aims to test, develop and demonstrate practices by which Basotho communities can improve the production and yield of fish from small reservoirs and water conservation dams.

The pilot activities start with a preparatory phase comprised of bio-technical and socio-economic information gathering. The analysis of the information will facilitate the future development and management of small water body exploitation.

This report describes the findings of the socio-economic investigations. The study was undertaken by, Ms Sevaly Sen, Consultant Socio-economist, appointed by ALCOM, together with Mrs M Khiba, District Officer for Youth and Women, appointed by the Bureau of Youth and Women's Affairs.
