Pilot project activities should concentrate on farm households with fish ponds living in communities in the Chibote area.
The pilot project should have components dealing with of poor farmers and women.
Fingerling production and distribution should be improved by:-
improving the fingerling production and distribution capacity of the DoF Fish Farm
trials with fingerling production by private individuals and groups.
Improvement of the DoF extension service by training DoF personnel, producing extension materials and assisting in the planning of extension activities.
A training and extension programme for fish farmers focusing on improved pond construction, better water management and improved feeding and fertilization.
Trials to integrate fish ponds in the dambo cultivation.
Trials for fish production with leguminous plants and grasses near the ponds.
Contacts should be made through the Provincial Agricultural Engineer to design more efficient use of water resources in fish farming areas.
Growth of fingerlings from the Fiyongoli broodstock should be compared with the fingerlings from broodstock caught from lakes or rivers.
Minor Field Study projects are recommended on the following topics :-
improvement of the integrated production system
hydrology and irrigation systems
soil and soil conservation.
Possibilities for introducing small scale labour saving technologies in rural areas of Luapula should be considered.
