PREPARATION OF THIS REPORT
This document presents the final version of the report of the Third Session of the Working Party on Fisheries Technology of the Commission for Inland Fisheries of Latin America (COPESCAL), held in the FAO Regional Office, in Santiago, Chile, from 7 to 11 May 1990.
ABSTRACT
By express mandate of the Commission for Inland Fisheries of Latin America, at its fifth session (Panama City, June 1988), the Working Party on Fisheries Technology analyzed the socio-economic aspects of the artisanal fishermen of the Region. The Working Party met at the FAO Regional Office in Santiago, Chile, from 7 to 11 May 1990. Experts from seven countries of the Region participated in the meeting and their technical discussions centered on the following specific aspects: 1) types of national fishermen organizations and their role in the management and development of artisanal fisheries; 2) socio-economic requirements of the artisanal fishery communities; 3) opportunities and constraints for the participation of women and youth in artisanal fishery activities; 4) lines of credit for the fishermen and their organizations, and 5) training methods and extension service for the artisanal fishery communities. The Working Party formulated recommendations for each one of these items for the consideration of the Commission. A brief summary of the types and scope of the fishermens' organizations in each of the countries of the members of the Group is presented in Appendix 5.
