Appendix 5
TRAYS - SPECIFICATIONS

For the pilot project, trays can be constructed locally according to the following specifications. Trays can be cut from a single piece of wire mesh as indicated and folded around a metal or wooden frame as illustrated in the photograph.

Trays can be constructed of single mesh size (1 in to 2 in2) (6.45 to 12.90 cm2) and a fine screen placed over this mesh to hold small imported oysters until they reach a size that will not pass through. The fine mesh is then removed and the oysters remain in the tray until marketable size is reached.

Wire mesh is cut according to pattern dimensions, and wired to frame. A divider is placed inside the tray to keep the oysters from piling up on one side or corner. Plastic all purpose trays should be considered should extensive oyster culture be undertaken. These trays are virtually indestructable and eliminate the necessity of replacing the wire or plastic mesh trays which have a relatively short life due to corrosion, breakage, etc.
