SUMMARY

Over the past few years there has been a significant increase in the abundance of tilapia and clupeids in Kainji Lake.

Landings of tilapia by commercial fishermen are comparatively small, while the commercial fishery for clupeids does not extend beyond the more riverine section of lake near Yelwa.

Experimental and exploratory fishing with small mid-water trawls and seine nets are described and the results of comparative tests made with monofilament and multifilament gill nets are given.

Recommendations based on these studies have been made with a view to the future establishment of successful fisheries for these under-exploited species, capable of substantially increasing the total annual production of the lake.
