Not all of the tropics is covered by lush forests with diverse species of flora and fauna. Much land is either degraded or naturally infertile. To afforest such lands in an economically beneficial way requires extensive knowledge of the capabilities of various tree species and their seed sources. This paper by A. Greaves provides as much information as was available on the two trees in question at the end of 1978.
Much of the data in this study came from internationally organized and sponsored seed-gathering expeditions along a number of trails, primarily in Central America and the West Indies. In all there were 126 assessments made for Pinus caribaea Morelet from seeds gathered in 22 different countries; for Pinus oocarpa Schiede 101 assessments were made from seeds in 18 countries. The study discusses which provenances were successful and which were not, and attempts to offer reasons.

So say co-editors R.N. Tewari and O.A. Mascarenhas, both of the Xavier Institute, Centre for Management and Labour Studies, Jamshedpur, India, in introducing this book. The selections printed here are based on the second workshop for community forest management and rural development held at the Xavier Institute, 21-22 January 1979.
Highlighting the workshop, and the book, are case studies in community forestry which were made in four different Indian states: Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Included also are four background papers, a paper describing an overall methodology for making such case studies and three papers which attempt to synthesize the case studies made and to draw conclusions from them. Various programmes, outlines and data are then presented in 43 pages of appendixes.
A consistent theme is that community forest management is a new concept which will require acceptance, education and change among all those concerned, particularly professional foresters, government officials and forest dwellers themselves. The ultimate goal is to involve local people in the planting, conservation, development and exploitation of forests in a way which harmonizes local and national needs.

FAO's 33rd annual yearbook of statistics in the forest products industry includes three basic kinds of information: data on the volume of production and trade between 1967 and 1978 (this comprises most of the book); data on the direction of trade in the years 1977 and 1978; and data on the unit value of trade in some commodities. Information is obtained from the individual countries by means of replies to questionnaires and is compiled by FAO in conjunction with the Economic Commission for Europe. However, the volume also includes data based upon FAO estimates from other sources.
The second section, the direction of trade tables, has been revised this year to include only tables of export data. The trade matrixes list only those exporting or importing countries whose activity comprises at least l percent of the world's total.

In making investments or in setting policy, industries, governments and individuals need complete information on both up-to-date prices and on recent series of prices for all wood products. Providing data on the former is beyond the scope of this kind of publication, but it does address the latter, offering 453 series of prices in 52 countries for every year from 1960 to 1978. Prices are included for roundwood, sawnwood, wood-based panels, pulp, paper and paperboard.
This document is the second issue of forest products prices for the years 1960-1978. Two changes from the original edition have been made. First, a number of new series have been added and, second, the tables are presented in a clearer and more accessible manner. Prices are quoted in national currencies, in US dollars and as an index of the dollar price using 1970 as the base year.
