1. Introduction

A study of Energy Utilisation and Requirements in the Rural Sector of Botswana, for the Government of Botswana's Ministry of Mineral Resources and Water Affairs, was carried out in 1985.

The study, intended to investigate future supply and demand trends as well as the current situation, was carried out against a background of high population growth rates, increasing rates of urbanisation, a heavy dependence in all sectors on wood as a source of fuel and a recent period of drought, which has introduced further stress into an already delicately balanced ecological environment.

For these reasons it was important that a pragmatic approach to the study be taken and that a real attempt be made to provide some practicable solutions to problems highlighted by the study.
