TORRY ADVISORY NOTE No. 96
This Advisory Note lists common names of about a hundred commercial species of fish and shellfish in the languages most likely to be met with when trading in the European Community.
The list includes the important commercial species caught in the North East Atlantic and Mediterranean: the criterion for inclusion is that at least 1000 tonnes of the species are caught in this area. This criterion has been relaxed for some fresh water species and other important species; it could not be rigorously observed in any case since catches vary from year to year.
The species are listed under a common English name, but alternative names are often added. Under the UK Food Labelling Regulations, only certain names may be used in the retail sale of most fish species; all such names are included in the present list, marked with an asterisk.
The currently accepted scientific name of each species is given in italics. Alternative scientific names are listed but, where the English name includes more than one species or more than one group of species, these are indicated by a † sign.
Common names are given, where known, in Danish, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian. Norwegian, Portuguese and Spanish. Although Norway is not a member of the European Community it has important fish trading links with the Community and is, at the time of writing, again considering the possibility of joining the Community. Not more than two names are given in the languages other than English; many other common names have had to be omitted in the interests of space.

Lists the scientific, English and foreign names of about 100 commercial species of marine and freshwater fish and shellfish caught in the North East Atlantic and Mediterranean most likely to be met when trading in the European Community. The common names permitted for retail sale of species under the UK Food Labelling Regulations are identified. The species are presented in related groups as far as is possible, and an alphabetical index of all the names in all languages is included. Since the Note was released it has been agreed that the specific scientific name for rainbow trout should be Oncorhynchus mykiss, not Salmo gairdneri and the entry has been amended (see the notes accompanying Note 74).
