The numbered entries that follow give the English and scientific names, followed by the chosen common names in as many of the nine languages as possible. The alphabetical index at the end includes all the names. To use the list look up the name in any language in the index and turn to the numbered entry to obtain the equivalents in other languages.
In preparing the alphabetical index, letters in Scandinavian languages that do not occur in the English alphabet have been treated as the letters they resemble; for example 0 and a have been treated like o and a.
The abbreviations used in the numbered entries are:
