Dr. Fridtjof Nansen research vessel visit highlights FAO commitment to sustainable fisheries management in Angola

25/07/2024

Luanda - A delegation from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Angola, represented by Interim Representative of FAO in Angola Paulo Dias, visited the Dr. Fridtjof Nansen research vessel. The visit was attended by the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, H.E. Carmen do Sacramento Neto, and the Norwegian Ambassador to Angola, H.E. Bjørnar Hotvedt. This visit reinforced the commitment to research and the sustainability of marine ecosystems.

During the visit, the significance of the ongoing collaboration between Angola and Norway was highlighted, particularly in the context of marine research and sustainable fisheries management. The Dr. Fridtjof Nansen vessel, which plays a crucial role in marine research, is instrumental in collecting data that informs the sustainable management of fisheries in Angola.

Minister Carmen do Sacramento Neto emphasized the importance of adopting sustainable practices to ensure the longevity of marine resources, aligning with the global standards set by the FAO. The presence of the Norwegian Ambassador underlined Norway's support and collaboration in advancing Angola's fisheries sector.

The delegation's visit to the research vessel marks a significant step towards enhancing the scientific basis for fisheries management and ensuring the long-term sustainability of Angola's marine ecosystems. This initiative is part of a broader effort to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and promote responsible fisheries management practices in the region.

FAO's ongoing support and the cooperation between Angola and Norway are pivotal in achieving these goals, reflecting a shared commitment to preserving marine biodiversity and promoting sustainable development in the fisheries sector.

The measures for managing fisheries in Angola are adopted on an annual cycle, following proposals by fisheries research and discussions in the competent councils of the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources. These measures are then approved by the Council of Ministers. The adopted fisheries management system aims to protect fishery resources and is aligned with FAO’s Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. This includes the establishment of: a) Total allowable catches, b) Restrictions on the number of vessels, c) Observance of closed seasons, d) Mandatory continuous monitoring systems (VMS) on all industrial vessels, and the ratification of the Agreement on Port State Measures to prevent, deter, and eliminate IUU fishing.

This visit exemplifies the concerted efforts of national and international stakeholders in fostering a sustainable and responsible approach to fisheries management in Angola.
