FAO regional Emergency Coordination Unit (ECU)

An FAO regional Emergency Coordination Unit has been established in Dakar to strengthen the coordination of FAO’s response to the locust crisis.

This Unit will have a dual purpose. On the one hand it will contribute to the regional coordination of the desert locust campaign within the framework of the Commission for Desert Locust control in Western Africa (CLCPRO) liaising closely with its FAO Secretary, Mr Thami Ben Halima and the national locust control teams.

On the other hand, the Unit will be responsible for developing and coordinating FAO’s agricultural and livestock relief and rehabilitation program in response to the locust crisis.

The purpose of the Unit is not in any way to take over the national responsibility for the locust control campaign, but to contribute to better coordination at regional level in order to ensure optimal use of available resources. The unit will assist the FAO Offices in the affected countries in needs assessments and ensure regional balance in a possible appeal to the international donor community and consistency and coherence in FAO’s relief/rehabilitation programme. The office is clearly of a temporary nature.
