FAO Welcomes 21 Colombian Institutions to AGRIS!

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) welcomes 21 distinguished Colombian institutions to the International System for Agricultural Science and Technology (AGRIS). These institutions bring critical research and expertise to the AGRIS network, furthering the global effort to address agricultural challenges and promote sustainable practices.

The Colombian institutions now contributing to AGRIS include:

  • Corporación Universitaria del Meta
  • Universidad de La Sabana

Thanks to the collaboration between AGRIS and FAO Colombia, the number of data providers in the country has grown from 11 in 2023 to 59 in 2024, marking a significant milestone. Furthermore, the total records shared by all Colombian data providers have increased from 61,232 to 101,979 during the same period, enriching the AGRIS network with diverse and impactful research.

These newly added institutions contribute an impressive 33,431 records, addressing vital topics such as crop yield, livestock, environmental management, plant diseases, and sustainable development. This extensive contribution amplifies AGRIS's capacity to foster innovation and share knowledge that advances agriculture and food security globally.

During the opening remarks at the AGRIS introduction webinar in Colombia, Mr. Diego Mora García, Deputy Representative of FAO in Colombia, highlighted the critical role of FAO in promoting rural development in the country through four focus areas: nutrition, agricultural production, the environment, and livelihoods. He emphasized the importance of knowledge management and international collaboration through AGRIS, stating that it facilitates access to vital information and drives progress in sustainable agriculture and food systems. He also underscored the relevance of initiatives like these in strengthening connections with academic and research sectors, and enriching knowledge-sharing and collaborative experiences.

This milestone reflects the strong collaboration between FAO Colombia and AGRIS, building a bridge that connects Colombian research with the global agricultural community. By sharing these records, Colombian research gains international visibility, empowering policymakers, researchers, and farmers to address critical agricultural issues, foster innovation, and promote sustainable practices.
