The purpose of this document is to provide a review of the main tenure-related challenges that can affect agroforestry adoption to inform policies and project implementation. Drawing on practical cases, the document also presents measures and approaches which could potentially fuel the adoption of agroforestry, concluding with a number of specific recommendations for formulation and implementation of tenure policies promoting agroforestry.

As an analytical tool, the 10 Elements can help countries to operationalise agroecology. By identifying important properties of agroecological systems and approaches, as well as key considerations in developing an enabling environment for agroecology, the 10 Elements are a guide for policymakers, practitioners and stakeholders in planning, managing and evaluating agroecological transitions.

This working paper, the first in a new series on forest and landscape restoration, examines how agroforestry can advance land restoration and conservation, while increasing the resilience of agroecosystems and their contribution to food security and poverty alleviation.

To promote agroforestry in national policy frameworks and boost its impact, FAO- in collaboration with the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Centre (CATIE) and the Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD)- has prepared this guide, designed to assist countries to support conditions that will optimize agroforestry’s contribution to national development.
