Donor funded fisheries development projects frequently procure and donate fishing boats to fishers. The process however is often fraught with issues and difficulties which go far beyond boat design. This document provides lessons learned (good and bad) from the field activities of an FAO executed fishery project on boat procurement in Cambodia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam. These lessons learned should be of benefit to other projects.

An international boat building consultant who conducted a safety at sea assessment for Cambodia identified that the traditional 12 m wooden vessel typically used in Cambodia for inshore fishing was unstable. RFLP arranged a hands-on training course for boat builders on the construction of an improved and more stable design of wooden inshore fishing boat. This illustrated manual documents the building process used step by step.
