FAO at COP16
The 2024 United Nations Biodiversity Conference, including the sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), will be held in Cali, Colombia from 21 October to 1 November 2024, under the
theme “Peace with Nature”.
At COP15, Parties adopted the milestone Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, also known as the Biodiversity Plan.
By COP16, Parties to the CBD are expected to align their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) with the Plan. Among its key tasks, COP16 is set to further develop the monitoring framework to assess progress in the implementation
of the Biodiversity Plan, and to finalise the multilateral mechanism on the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from the use of digital sequence information on genetic resources.
For FAO, COP16 is a crucial platform for dialogue, knowledge sharing, and decision-making on the key role that agrifood sectors hold as solutions to address biodiversity loss. Guided by its Strategy on Mainstreaming Biodiversity across Agricultural Sectors, FAO works to reduce the negative impacts of agriculture on biodiversity, promote sustainable agricultural practices and contribute to the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of biodiversity.
