FAO Liaison Office with the European Union and the Kingdom of Belgium

"FAO Brussels Dialogue" debuts with FAO Chief Economist Máximo Torero Cullen

23/04/2020

Over 400 participants tuned in to the first edition of the FAO Brussels Dialogues. This is a new series launched by the FAO Liaison Office in Brussels to share FAO’s expertise with European Union institutions, policymakers, academia, civil society, private sector and other partners and stakeholders.

Opened by FAO Brussels Director Rodrigo de Lapuerta, the dialogue featured FAO Chief Economist and Assistant Director-General of the Economic and Social Development Department, Máximo Torero Cullen, as its special guest. During the session, Mr Torero spoke about the COVID-19 pandemic impact on food supply chains worldwide and how stakeholders should respond to new threats. Following the presentation, the European Commission representative Leonard Mizzi, Head of Unit for Rural Development, Food Security and Nutrition at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development (DG DEVCO), and Member of European Parliament and of the European Parliamentary Alliance against Hunger and Malnutrition Paolo De Castro, offered their insights. The virtual dialogue gave the audience the chance to ask questions directly of Mr Torero.

The recording of the presentation and the dialogue can be found here.

FAO Brussels will organize similar virtual events for larger and targeted audiences in the weeks to come.
