AGRICORD conference – Farmers’ organizations at the centre of partnership to tackle food insecurity

13/12/2022

Around two-thirds of people experiencing food insecurity rely on agriculture for their livelihoods, while just 8% of humanitarian aid goes to agricultural inputs and technologies. The strong potential for investment in agriculture to drive development to combat hunger and malnutrition, was central to a conference held by AgriCord, a global alliance of agri-agencies based in Brussels.

Speaking at the event, Fatouma Seid FAO’s Deputy Director of the Partnerships and UN Collaboration Division highlighted the Organization’s efforts to provide reliable and comprehensive information regarding food insecurity predictions, while supporting the resilience of local agrifood systems.

Taking part in a panel session on food crisis and food security, she described how FAO contributes to tackling food insecurity at a global level, through the provision of data, analysis and projections.

Seid ended her intervention by stressing the importance of developing safety nets and social protection programmes for the most vulnerable people, as these can make the difference between life and death. FAO is working together with other United Nations agencies and partners, to support the introduction of such policies in different countries.
