Belgian Parliamentarians: New working group meets on food security

The Director of the FAO Liaison office in Brussels, Rodrigo de Lapuerta exchanged views with the newly established Working Group on Food Security of the Belgian House of Representatives in October. The discussion focused on food insecurity, sustainable food systems, and healthy diets among other topics.

The FAO Brussels Director highlighted the important role of parliamentarians all over the world in actively contributing to the development and updating of policy and regulatory frameworks to eradicate hunger. He called the creation of the Belgian Parliament Food Security Working Group an important step towards raising awareness and placing food insecurity, sustainable agriculture, healthy diets, biodiversity and climate change at the top of the national and international agendas and referred to the European Parliamentary Alliance against Hunger and Malnutrition as a good example.

Belgium and its Regional Goverments are strong partners of FAO’s in the fight against hunger and the joint work towards sustainable food systems. Together, they collaborate on a number of topics from emergencies and resilience building to biodiversity and innovation.
