Belgian Voices on the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations

29/10/2020

SDG Forum- Belgium invited Dominique Burgeon, Director of the FAO Office of Emergencies and Resilience to join prominent speakers and discuss the added value and challenges for the United Nations throughout its 75 years long history.

Mr Burgeon highlighted the key role of the UN as an honest broker in supporting partners to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and particularly SDG2 -Zero Hunger, on reversing the trend of chronic and acute hunger, exacerbated by conflict, climate change and COVID-19.

FAO provides humanitarian assistance jointly with its partners but also builds the resilience of the populations by preserving livelihoods of affected communities, who are mainly relying on agriculture. The Organization also builds consensus on evidence, raises awareness and provides a better understanding for decision-makers.

“The UN should continue to deliver at scale. Acting before a threat becomes a disaster, to strengthen local capacities and to serve Member countries in achieving the SDGs,” Burgeon said.
