Desert locust infestation in the horn of Africa

30/03/2020

FAO is helping countries to respond to the worst desert locust upsurge in a quarter of a century across the Greater Horn of Africa, by supporting government-led locust control and surveillance, preparing rapid damage and impact assessments, and rolling out livelihood interventions. FAO is continuing to support these activities despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The European Union has contributed 11 million euro. The Kingdom of Belgium also contributed 500 000 euro to FAO’s efforts through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation (SFERA). To give an overview of these extensive and complex operations, FAO has released a new desert locust information dashboard which gives a comprehensive breakdown of FAO’s response to-date, as well as funding received and required.
