10/02/2023

FAO Brussels Director Raschad Al-Khafaji paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy Chief of Mission of the Indian Embassy in Brussels Debasish Prusty. The meeting discussed potential collaboration to promote the International Year of Millets 2023 together.

At its 75th session in March 2021, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2023 the International Year of Millets (IYM 2023). FAO is the lead agency for celebrating the Year in collaboration with other relevant stakeholders.

The International Year of Millets aims to draw the public’s attention to the potential and significance of this crops. Millets have great potential as an affordable nutritious food, a worthy component for global healthy diets, and a crop that can withstand climate change, while at the same time improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers, nutrition and the environment.

With the slogan “Rich in heritage, full of potential” FAO officially launched the International Year of Millets on 6 December 2022. Many events, exhibitions and social media campaigns are planned to take place throughout 2023 such as the #IYM2023 Global Chefs Challenge, informing consumers, raising awareness and empowering stakeholders to take action.
