FAO Brussels celebrates International Day of Women and Girls in Science: Powerful video testimonies on the need for more women and girls in science

11/02/2023

“We need more women, we need more girls and we need them to participate much more to design policy, interface activities and initiatives to ensure we leave no one behind as we are transforming our agrifood systems”, this was the key message of the FAO Chief Scientist Ismahane Elouafi as she opened the celebratory video campaign organized by the FAO Liaison Office in Brussels celebrating the 8th International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The Day was an opportunity to promote full and equal access of women and girls in science.

Elouafi’s message was followed by four other strong women who each one in their area of activity have broken boundaries and have excelled putting Science and Innovation at the heart of sustainable development. Marjan Verhaegen Experience Director at Technopolis, Lydia Mutyebele Ngoi Alderwoman of Housing, Public Patrimony and Equal Opportunities at the City of Brussels, Giorgia Stasi Geologist at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and Louise Haxthausen Director of the UNESCO Office in Brussels, all talked about the importance of tapping into the talent of young women and girls if we wish to successfully face the many challenges of our times.

Gender equality is a cross cutting issue for the FAO Strategic Framework, and the support of young girls, their education and their full ability to make their ideas heard are crucial levers for the transformation of our agrifood systems.
