FAO Brussels discusses food and nutrition with Ghent University – Empowering Women and Youth

24/03/2021

FAO and the University of Ghent have been working closely the past year to structure a strategic partnership for the upcoming years on important topics of FAO’s mandate such as Nutrition, Food Safety, Forestry and on publications such as the recently-released Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women (MDD-W) updated guide for measurement: from collection to action.

In the first half of March, FAO took part in the advisory board of the International Master of Rural Development and Nutrition, to provide strategic guidance on the learning outcomes and competencies of the master course that are needed and relevant in the fight against hunger and malnutrition. In the second half of the month, FAO presented its work with the EU to the master students. The FAO Liaison Office in Brussels provided insights on the day-to-day work of an international organization to contribute to the policy dialogue and awareness-raising on food and agriculture-related topics including through the European Parliamentary Alliance against Hunger and Malnutrition.

Beyond the exchange of technical capacities and expertise, FAO collaborates with Academia to ensure the next generation has the relevant knowledge and capacities to tackle global and local challenges faced in the agri-food systems.

Academia and research institutions are key actors in the fight against hunger and malnutrition. With their vast technical expertise and ability to generate and disseminate knowledge and innovative solutions, academia and research institutions can support FAO and its Members in their actions towards achieving food and nutrition security and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
