Resetting Food systems from Farm to Fork

01/12/2020

The Barilla Center for Food & Nutrition (BCFN) and Food Tank organized a lively discussion on themes pertainign among others to sustainable food systems and the European Union’s Farm to Fork Strategy.

European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Janusz Wojciechowski spoke at the event highlighting key points of the strategy and underlined the importance of sustainable food systems, the shortening of the food supply chain, and the role of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in its implementation.

FAO’s Chief Economist Máximo Torero Cullen also spoke at the event and underscored the need to increase resilience by minimizing the vulnerability of communities to natural disasters and coping with disasters when they occur. Minimizing risk will require early warning systems, a One Health Approach to prevent future zoonosis and increased access to agricultural insurances he noted.

Coping with disasters can be done through social protection, the redirection of subsidies to sectors most in need by governments, boosting productivity and investing in digital innovation in the fields of food and agriculture, all of which are key elements of FAO’s resilience and recovery plan.
