Royal SDG Advocate visits United Nations in Brussels

23/09/2021

Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of the Belgians paid a visit to the United Nations House in Brussels, the headquarters of several UN agencies, funds and programmes. During her visit, the monarch met the representatives of all UN organizations in Brussels, including FAO Brussels Director Raschad Al-Khafaji, and discussed main priorities of the United Nations including achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Her Majesty was recently reconfirmed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres as an SDG Advocate, a role she has held since 2016.

Her visit to the UN House included a virtual field trip to United Nations projects in Liberia that are addressing challenges close to the heart of Queen Mathilde, such as child labour and social protection, as well as reproductive and mental health.

It was the Belgian Queen’s first visit to the UN House. She planned her trip to coincide with the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 76) in New York.
