Striking the right balance in the sustainable livestock sector transformation

Thanawat Tiensin FAO Director of Animal Production and Health took part in a conference organized by INTERBEV, the French Livestock and Meat Association. The conference with the title Livestock, Meat & the Green Deal: What vision for the EU? gathered professionals and experts of the livestock and meat sectors to discuss how to build a shared approach to a sustainable meat production and consumption “model”.

During his intervention, Tiensin underlined the need for a right balance in the sustainable livestock sector transformation, in order for it to become more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable. “We need multi-criteria to address this sustainability issue” emphasized Tiensin.

The speakers of the conference also exchanged on the current challenges affecting the EU livestock sector and highlighted the benefits of livestock farming for biodiversity protection, carbon sequestration, rural development and food security.

While in Brussels, Tiensin also met with experts from the European Commission and presented the Sustainable Livestock Transformation Initiative, FAO’s work on animal production and health and how FAO can support and work with members, farmers, producers and private sector for sustainable livestock production.
