FAO's Blue Transformation at the spotlight during European Ocean Days

06/03/2024

FAO Assistant Director-General and Director of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division Manuel Barange was invited to deliver the keynote address at the first European Ocean Days, a comprehensive week-long exploration of European maritime issues that took place in Brussels from 4 to 8 March.

In his speech, Barange outlined the potential that economic, social, and technological shifts have for the future of the seas. He presented the objectives of the Blue Transformation, FAO’s approach that recognizes the importance of aquatic food systems as drivers of employment, economic growth, social development and environmental recovery, which all underpin the SDGs.

Following his keynote address, Barange participated in a moderated discussion with Charlina Vitcheva, Director-General of DG Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the European Commission.

As part of his mission to Brussels, Barange also met OACPS Assistant Secretary-General for Environment and Climate Action, Cristelle Pratt, and Ambassador Jestas Nyananga of Tanzania.
