01/06/2023

With the focus on FAO’s efforts to support efforts in achieving both Sustainable Development Goal 2 and the 1.5 degree climate goal, FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torero intervened at an event organized by the Slovenian Mission to the EU with the title “Food systems and SDGs: National pathways and Multilateral solutions – Ingredients for a successful way forward”.

“To transform agrifood systems we need to assess different pathways globally and identify what is needed in sustainable financing, to achieve SDG2 and to reach the 1,5 degree climate goal”, said Torero.

Permanent Representative of Slovenia to the EU, Iztok Jarc, opened the event, which also saw interventions by Claire Bury, DG SANTE Deputy Director-General and EU Convenor for the UN Food Systems Summit, John Clarke, Director for International Affairs at DG AGRI, Leonard Mizzi, Head of Unit for Agrifood Systems and Fisheries at DG INTPA, and Satu Santala, IFAD Assistant Vice-President for External Relations and Governance.

The meeting acknowledged the UN Food Systems Summit and its subsequent  processes, including the implementation of national pathways, the work of thematic coalitions and the Stocktaking Moment scheduled for 24 to 26 July at FAO headquarters in Rome as crucial components in translating global commitments into tangible and expedited actions.
