The Director of FAO's Office of Statistics, José Alejandro Rosero Moncayo, participated at a public hearing on “Sustainable agriculture: past, present and future – the role of data and indicators’’, organised by the Committee on Agriculture and Rural development and the Committee on Environment, Public health and Food safety at the European Parliament.

In his intervention he provided an overview of the approaches and challenges related to collecting, processing, and assessing data on agricultural sustainability. Moncayo talked about the rapidly evolving need for data and indicators that would contribute to the design and monitoring of sustainable agriculture and climate policies globally and at the EU level. Thanawat Tiensin, Director of FAO’s Office on Animal Production and Health, shared a video message on FAO’s role in promoting sustainable livestock production around the world during the high-level conference on the “Future of livestock in the EU and beyond”, organised by the FEFANA association in Brussels.

Tiensin underlined that prioritising climate-smart agricultural and livestock practices in food production chains is essential for food security. He also pointed out that human and animal health are closely interlinked and that we must aim to produce more with less impact to ensure the sustainability of agrifood systems as well as food safety.
