05/12/2023

The European Commission's Research Executive Agency (REA) organized a conference on "Food 2030: green and resilient food systems" in Brussels to highlight the accomplishments of initiatives connected to EU food systems and to examine future research and innovation directions.

Stefanos Fotiou, Director of the FAO Office of Sustainable Development Goals and Head of the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub, participated online at the conference session with the title “Global Food Systems Governance and Science Policy Interface”.

Fotiou talked about the importance of transforming the agrifood systems for sustainability and resilience to achieve the EU Green Deal goals. He then emphasised that the science-policy interface must serve the needs of decision-makers amidst a growing political interest for agrifood systems transformation.

Fotiou also explained the systems-approach FAO is taking in order to understand the challenges and to target transformational change through a coherent set of policies, initiatives, and investments. Participants further debated about the challenges of global agrifood systems governance and science policy interfaces and touched upon the role of trade, social sciences, and the SDGs in the framework of the agrifood systems transformation.
