Science and innovation for agrifood systems transformation

30/03/2023

Upon invitation by the Permanent Representation of Denmark to the European Union, FAO Brussels participated  at an interactive panel discussion with the title “How can the EU better integrate science and innovation to ensure the sustainable transformation of our agri-food system?”

The event was opened by Deputy Permanent Representative of Denmark to the EU Søren Jacobsen and closed by Odd Sinding Danish Ambassador to Belgium. Issues discussed at the event included the green transition for farmers and how to bring science and innovation closer to society.

FAO Brussels intervened in the name of the Organization’s Office of Innovation and alluded to a number of pertinent issues such as the regulatory framework for new genomic techniques, existing and new tools for animal and plant breeding as well as the interlinkages between science and evidence for decision-making.

Particular mention was made to the first ever FAO Science and Innovation strategy that places strong emphasis on the science-policy interface to strengthen research for development, access to innovations, science communication and open access to knowledge platforms.
