Second Global Parliamentary Summit

15/06/2023

More than 200 parliamentarians (including six Members of the European Parliament), 15 presidents and vice-presidents of national and regional parliaments and parliamentary bodies from 64 countries participated at the Second Global Parliamentary Summit against Hunger and Malnutrition that took place in Valparaiso, Chile, from 15-16 June 2023.
The Summit closed with the first-ever Global Parliamentary Pact to work towards the transformation of agrifood systems and to promote the right to adequate food for all.

The goal of the Pact is to generate consensus on the need for action in these priority areas and encourage broader political commitment and support. It also backs parliamentary endeavours in developing strong, coherent and comprehensive legal frameworks to enhance food security and nutrition.

Members of the European Parliament reiterated their dedication to working at both the EU and global levels to advance legislative initiatives and policies that promote these goals. They stressed the importance of safeguarding the environment as part of the global efforts to implement Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.

“This event has demonstrated that the first meeting of parliamentarians in 2018 in Spain was not a coincidence. A process has begun today in Chile that will continue in other continents. FAO will continue to provide technical support to legislative actions that contribute to guaranteeing the right to adequate food,” noted Mario Lubetkin, FAO’s Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean at the closing ceremony.
The Summit was organized by FAO, together with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the National Congress of Chile and the Government of Chile.  It received support from the European Commission, the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID) and the Parliamentary Front against Hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean.
