Sustainable livestock is an asset to transform agrifood systems and reduce GHG emissions

23/02/2024

Sustainable livestock is a key asset not only contributing to the eradication of hunger and malnutrition by 2030, but also to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions, and to conserve biodiversity.

This was one of the key messages delivered by Thanawat Tiensin, Director of FAO’s Animal Production and Health Division and Chief Veterinary Officer, during his mission to Brussels on 22 and 23 February.

Tiensin was invited to present FAO's main activities on animal health, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), One Health and other workstreams of his division at the Council Working Party on International Food and Agricultural Questions (AGRIFAO), as part of the preparation of EU Member States for the second session of the Sub-Committee on Livestock of the Committee on Agriculture (COAG).

In his meeting with experts in the European Commission, Tiensin highlighted how FAO can support and work with Members, farmers, producers and other actors of the private sector towards sustainable livestock production. He mentioned FAO's recent publication launched at COP28, "Pathways towards lower emissions", which provides a global assessment of the greenhouse gas emissions and mitigation options from livestock agrifood systems.
