The triple nexus of food security: FAO Brussels presents at Belgian Food security platform event

25/05/2023
Upon invitation by the Directorate General for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid of the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, FAO presented at a meeting of the “Plateforme Agricole et de Sécurité Alimentaire (PASA)”. The platform brings together Belgian stakeholders and practitioners specialized in agriculture, food security and nutrition.

Under the title: “Triple nexus and food security: how to act for food security in fragile contexts?”, a deep dive into the so-called “triple nexus” was proposed, linking humanitarian, development, and peace elements of crises and emphasizing food insecurity in fragile contexts.

The discussion addressed both theoretical aspects of the nexus as well as its implementation, opportunities and challenges.

FAO Liaison Office Director, Raschad Al-Khafaji, presented the FAO strategic framework, and how this global framework relates to preventing and addressing food crises. Additionally, he presented the most recent Global Report on Food Crises analysis on acute food insecurity.

FAO also presented the experiences of the network in translating the conceptual framework into concrete strategic dialogues at different geographical levels, as well as the main obstacles encountered and progress achieved in implementing the nexus.

The event offered the opportunity to participants to exchange with speakers from various institutions such as the the World Food Programme (WFP), the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), a Belgian consortium of humanitarian NGOs, including Oxfam, the Red Cross and Caritas as well as “Action pour la Promotion des Initiatives Locales” (APIL) an NGO from Burkina Faso.
