Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring

A framework for ecosystem restoration monitoring
Ecosystems around the world have the potential to thrive once again through dedicated restoration efforts. By addressing the challenges posed by human activities, climate change, and natural disasters, we can preserve and enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services. Accurate and transparent data is essential for assessing and adapting restoration strategies, making robust monitoring frameworks a priority. As the impacts of climate change become more pronounced, these efforts are more urgent than ever.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) leads the charge in addressing ecosystem restoration through its initiatives under the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Central to these efforts is the Framework for Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring (FERM), which aims to build a comprehensive standardized database to document where restoration is happening and how to connect different datasets. This approach ensures systematic tracking and integration of restoration efforts, enhancing global understanding and better coordination. Moreover, FAO leverages advanced technologies and fosters collaboration with global partners to develop standardized monitoring protocols and training materials, empowering local communities and governments to undertake their restoration monitoring.

Through its concerted efforts, the FAO aims to provide a clearer picture of restoration impacts, fostering global cooperation and driving the adoption of best practices in ecosystem restoration. By equipping stakeholders with the right tools and knowledge, FAO enhances global efforts to restore and maintain healthy, resilient ecosystems for future generations.
