Los conflictos prolongados y las dificultades económicas son las principales causas de los elevados niveles de inseguridad alimentaria aguda y malnutrición en el Cercano Oriente y África del Norte. La región es también una de las más vulnerables del mundo a los efectos del cambio climático. Muy dependiente de las importaciones, el sector agroalimentario en el Cercano Oriente y África del Norte se ha visto muy afectado por los aumentos en los precios de artículos alimenticios básicos e insumos agrícolas debido a los efectos de la pandemia de COVID 19 y la guerra en Ucrania. Lo más preocupante es que tres países afectados por conflictos (el Sudán, la República Árabe Siria y el Yemen) se encuentran entre los diez países del mundo que presentan mayor número de personas en situaciones de crisis o peores niveles de inseguridad alimentaria.
