FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia

Subregional workshop on GEF-8

Hybrid Event, 25/05/2022 - 26/05/2022

The FAO–GEF partnership focuses its work on five focal areas: biodiversity, climate change, land degradation, international waters and chemicals, moving beyond simply conserving natural resources, creating the conditions for the sustainable use of these resources.

Over the years, the partnership has grown as the portfolio has increased to 22 projects in the Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan), Azerbaijan and Turkey – worth more than USD 83.3 million in total budget from GEF-5 (2010–2014) to current GEF-7 (2018–2022) funding cycle – in all GEF focal areas but with most projects in land degradation.

Objective

  • Discuss the potential areas for GEF-8 based on the existing experience in the region and develop potential proposals and synergies with potential GCF proposals and activities

Expected outputs:

  • Potential GEF proposals for the GEF-8 cycle including:
  1.      The regional umbrella project on Aral Sea Closed Basin Restoration
  2.      Several national projects concepts for submission to GEF-8
  • Strengthening  the synergies between GEF and GCF proposal at the country and regional level
