World Food Forum: The possibilities of youth in food and agricultural value chain development

Hybrid Event, 18/10/2022

Please note that this event has been postponed.

Rural youth in Europe and Central Asia offer valuable opportunities for rural development, yet they face several challenges, including hampered access to knowledge, training, natural resources (in particular to land) as well as finance, and many others. Despite a generally high level of development in the region, inequalities are on the rise, often leading to outmigration.

Acknowledging the challenging situation of rural youth in Europe and Central Asia, Member Countries at the 2022 Regional Conference for Europe called upon FAO to continue support to food systems transformation, including a focus on youth as key agents of change in the revitalization of rural areas and in the transformation towards sustainable food systems.

To this end, FAO launched a series of youth consultations in December 2021, which also contributes to the regional aspirations of the World Food Forum. The first consultation was an overview session on the challenges and opportunities for rural youth.

As a satellite event of the 2022 World Food Forum, the regional consultation on the promotion of youth engagement in sustainable food value chain development aims to highlight ongoing efforts and discuss successful experiences and existing challenges. Ultimately, the event seeks to strengthen regional networks and coalitions of experts and agents of change. Feedback gathered during the consultation will feed into FAO’s work in the region on rural youth.

The event will be held in English with simultaneous interpretation in Russian.
