FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia

Third regional meeting of the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock

Hybrid Event, 10/10/2023 - 12/10/2023

The third meeting of the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL) for Europe and Central Asia will continue to expand the dialogue established at the first regional GASL MSP meeting (April 2018, Uman, Ukraine) as well as through several virtual consultations, and the second regional GASL MSP meeting (June 2022, Tashkent, Uzbekistan) where the Regional Chapter was established.

The third GASL MSP regional meeting will focus on multi-stakeholder collaboration in the region to strengthen sustainability and resilience of livestock systems in response to change. The participants will consider both good practices (regional examples to emphasize and enhance the sustainability and resilience) and potential responses to topics essential for the livestock sector’s contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda through sustainable, resilient, inclusive food systems as per the GASL vision.

It is further recognized that among the examples of good practices and potential responses to change, a number of other themes will be addressed – with different emphases in various countries. These include, but not exclusively, the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, climate and biodiversity issues (both mitigation and adaptation, COP27, IPCC 6th report, methane commitments, and others), regenerative agriculture, animal welfare, and the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists. The regional themes will help orient the global meeting.

Seven delegates from the region will be selected at the event and invited to participate in person in the 13th GASL MSP Meeting in October–November 2023 in Thailand. During the global meeting, sufficient time will be dedicated to the regional reports to discuss the regional outcomes.
