The Sub-Regional Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations for the Pacific Islands will hold a Regional Stocktaking Conference on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) farm-based indicators. Thirteen countries will be represented, including the Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu. The conference is scheduled to take place in Nadi, Fiji, from 27-30 November 2023.
At the Regional Stocktaking Conference, statisticians, practitioners, and experts from government agencies, National Statistics Offices (NSOs), and ministries in the agriculture sectors from across the Pacific will get together to talk about their knowledge, experience, best practices, country opportunities, and challenges in planning, implementing, collecting, deriving, disseminating, using, and monitoring SDG indicators. They will also do a gap analysis and plan how to move forward.
The Regional Stocktaking Conference is being put together by the Sub-Regional Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAOSAP) with assistance from the Office of Chief Statistician (OCS) in terms of both technical and financial support. It will have nine sessions from November 27th to November 30th, 2023. The sessions will consist of workshops, presentations, discussions on practical work, and sessions for exchanging knowledge, all centered around three following topics:
- Presentation of the FAO SAP Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP/SAP/3905) and overview of the reporting of the SDG indicators (under FAO custodianship) in the Pacific.
- Refresher information and guidance on the SDG Farm-based indicators: Productivity of small-scale food producers (2.3.1); Income of small-scale food producers (2.3.2), Agricultural Sustainability (2.4.1) and Women’s ownership of agricultural land (5.a.1) methodology and tools.
- Country presentation and discussion on the opportunities, challenges, (data) gap analysis, an agreed way forward in terms of tailored technical assistance (for the implementation of the TCP/SAP/3905), capacity development, and sustainability that may be needed in collecting, reporting, and monitoring selected SDG farm-based indicators.
