3. RELATIONS WITH THE PROPOSED PROJECT FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF AQUACULTURE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

The participants were informed of the status of this proposal, which was being discussed for finalization by the parties concerned and the framework proposed for its implementation.

Some participants were already aware of its existance since their institutions had been visited by an FAO mission earlier on in 1978 and 1979, and there was quite a number of interventions from the floor during the various discussions, both requesting more information on the status of the proposal and urging a rapid implementation of the Project. These were indications of the great interest of the participating institutions in this Project and a recognition of the catalytic role it could play in fostering aquaculture development in the Mediterranean countries (see Recommendation COPRAQ/79/5).

During the brief discussion that followed the presentation, it was pointed out several times that COPRAQ could and should complement the activities of the Project in promoting exchange of technical information among the participating countries, and exchange of scientists and experts to work together on problems of common concern. Another area of possible collaboration between COPRAQ and the proposed Project would be in the work on adaptive research that will be required on transfer of different technologies from one country to another, and that due to the limitation in the number of experts, the Project would not be able to conduct.
