5. FUTURE ACTIVITIES

After discussing the topics for research during the intersessional period, it was agreed that research on nutrition should be pursued, especially on the detailed nutritional requirements and protein-energy balance of the diets prepared for the species cultured for commercial use resulting, hopefully, in more efficient and economical operations (see Recommendation COPRAQ/79/6).

A second area for cooperative research that was identified for the intersessional period was the study of the effects of environmental manipulation, such as control of photoperiod and thermoperiod, on gonadal development of the main finfish species under culture, as a way to extend the spawning season beyond the actual limits, to obtain a continuous production of fry and fingerlings throughout the year.
