PREPARATION OF THIS REPORT

The first session of the ACMRR Working Party on Aquaculture was held 17 to 23 May 1972, in Rome, with the co-sponsorship of the International Association for Biological Oceanography (IABO). This first session recommended, inter alia, that steps be taken to obtain significantly increased international support for aquaculture research, training and development, and that a second World Conference be organized to promote a global strategy and programme. The activities of the Working Party were subsequently suspended pending implementation of these recommendations. The latter culminated in the formulation of a global strategy at the World Technical Conference on Aquaculture held in Kyoto, the establishment of the UNDP/FAO Aquaculture Development and Coordination Programme, and of three sub-projects for the establishment of regional research and training centres in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Following the recommendations of an ad hoc Consultation on Aquaculture Research, held in Rome 5 to 9 May 1980 (see FAO Fisheries Report No.238), ACMRR reactivated the Working Party at its tenth session (1981) and provided revised terms of reference (see Appendix III). This is the report of the first meeting (second session) of the re-established Working Party, held 21–25 March 1983, in Rome, and was approved by the Working Party on 25 March 1983.
