La preparación de esta bibliografía obedece a la recomendación hecha por los países miembros de la Comisión de Pesca continental para América Latina (COPESCAL) en su Tercera Reunión (México, D.F., 30 noviembre – 6 diciembre 1983) a fin de facilitar a los investigadores el acceso a la literatura científica sobre las especies de agua dulce de América Latina y el Caribe.
La primera recopilación bibliográfica regional sobre el tema (Ziesler, R., 1979. Bibliografía sobre los peces de agua dulce de América Latina. COPESCAL, Documento Técnico No 2) ha sido publir cada por la FAO en 1979 y comprende referencias de publicaciones especializadas hasta 1979. La presente bibliografía actualiza la precedente e incluye las referencias de las publicaciones desde 1979 a 1985. También incluye las referencias de publicaciones de años anteriores, que fueron omitidas en la bibliografía de 1979.
Este documento contiene un total de 806 referencias bibliográficas parte de las cuales fueron enviadas directamente por los expertos de la región a la Secretaría de la COPESCAL, parte se obtuvo mediante la recuperación por computadora de las referencias registradas en la base de datos ASFA (Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts) sobre las ciencias acuáticas y otras se obtuvieron en la biblioteca de la FAO. Sin duda pueden existir otras publicaciones pertinentes que no han sido incluidas por no disponer de ellas.
Se agradecería por lo tanto a los países de la región que cooperen en forma regular enviando las referencias de publicaciones omitidas o futuras a la Secretaría de la COPESCAL, FAO, Roma, a fin de completar y actualizar este documento en forma periódica.
Los temas tratados en las publicaciones citadas en este documento se refieren principalmente a:
especies nativas o introducidas en las aguas dulces de América Latina y el Caribe,
especies marinas o salobres, de las que se conoce la presencia en agua dulce;
limnología y demás ciencias afines;
acuicultura experimental y aplicada;
diversos aspectos de las pesquerías continentales incluidos la producción y los recursos potenciales.
Las referencias están citadas por orden alfabético de autor y por un mismo autor por orden cronológico de publicación. Cada referencia está numerada por secuencia (001 a 806), para su referencia en los índices. Sólo en algunos casos los números no aparecen por secuencia numérica debido a que dichas referencias fueron incluidas a posteriori.
La mayor parte de las abreviaciones de los títulos de las series citadas siguen las reglas adoptadas por el Sistema Internacional de Información sobre Ciencias Acuáticas y la Pesca - ASFIS -(Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Information System).
Los títulos aparecen en el idioma original de la publicación, principalmente en español, portugués e inglés. A fin de facilitar a los usuarios el acceso a los temas específicos de esta bibliografía, se han elaborado tres indices:
INDICE GEOGRAFICO: Por orden alfabético de países y en lo posible subdividido en Regiones, Embalses, Lagos y Ríos.
INDICE TAXONOMICO: Por orden afabético de familia, género y/o especie.
INDICE TEMATICO: Agrupado en disciplinas como: Anatomía y Morfología, Acuicultura, Comportamiento, Fisiología, Nutrición, Pesquería, etc., y subdivididas en descriptores que representan conceptos más específicos sobre el mismo tema. Para el uso de la terminología de los descriptores, se utilizó: Mileo, A.T., 1985: Tesauro de términos para ciencias acuáticas y pesqueras (traducción del “Thesaurus of Terms for Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries”. COPESCAL, Documento Técnico No 3, 202 p.).
El número de especies contenidas en el índice taxonómico es de 246, siendo el género Sarotherodon el más referido (41 por ciento del total). El tema más estudiado es la Acuicultura con 18 por ciento del total.
This bibliography was prepared following the recommendation made by the member countries of the Commission for Inland Fisheries of Latin America (COPESCAL) at its Third Session (Mexico, D.F., 30 November – 6 December 1983) to facilitate the access of research workers to the scientific literature dealing with the inland-water species of Latin America and the Caribbean.
The first regional bibliography on this subject (Ziesler, R., 1979, Bibliography of Latin American Freshwater Fish, COPESCAL, Technical Paper No. 2) was published by FAO in 1979 and included the bibliographic references to specialized publications up to 1979. The present version updates the previous one and includes references to publications from 1979 to 1985. It also includes references to papers published in previous years but which were omitted in the 1979 bibliography.
The document contains a total of 806 references derived from the following sources: (1) from experts of the region through the Secretariat of COPESCAL: (2) from a computer search of the ASFA (Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts) database; (3) from the FAO library. There must be, of course, publication not included as they were not available to the compiler. It would be apreciated, therefore, if the experts in the region would cooperate by sending to the COPESCAL Secretariat, FAO, Rome, any omitted or new references in order to facilitate the periodical updating of this bibliography.
The subject of the publications cited in this bibliography refers mainly to:
endemic and introduced species of the fresh waters of Latin American and Caribbean countries,
marine and/or brackishwater species known to occur in the freshwater environment;
limnology and other related subjects dealing specifically with Latin American and Caribbean countries;
experimental and applied aquaculture;
aspects of inland fisheries including fish production and potential resources.
The references are listed alphabetically by author, and by year for successive publications by the same author. Each reference is sequentially numbered for its cross-reference in the indexes. Only in some cases the number beside each reference is not given in sequential order, as these had been added a posteriori. Most of the serial titles abbreviations follow the rules adopted by the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Information System (ASFIS).
Titles are given in the original language of the publication, mainly in Spanish, Portuguese and English.
In order to facilitate access to specific topics, the references in this Bibliography have been indexed geographically, taxonomically and by subject:
TAXONOMIC INDEX: by alphabetical order of family, genus and/or species.
SUBJECT INDEX: Grouped by main subject area such as Anatomy and Morphology, Aquaculture, Behaviour, Fisheries, Nutrition, etc.; furthermore, each main subject was broken down into descriptors representing more specific concepts within the same subject area. The English descriptors used were taken from the Thesaurus of Terms of Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries, by E. Fagetti (FAO Fisheries Circular No. 344, 1976).
Among the 246 species cited in the Taxonomic Index, the genus Sarotherodon represents 41 percent of the total. The subject area containing most references is aquaculture, representing 18 percent of the total number of references.
