In the final declaration of the G20 Leaders Summit, FAO has been recognized as key agency in pursuing the achievement of food security and nutrition for all, with the Food Coalition representing one of its concrete commitments.
The Leaders of the G20 met in Rome on 30 and 31 October 2021 and committed to:
“We are committed to achieving food security and adequate nutrition for all, leaving no one behind. To this end, we endorse the Matera Declaration and its Call to Action. We encourage partners and stakeholders to collaborate with or join the Food Coalition launched by the FAO as a means to respond to the impacts of COVID-19 on food security and nutrition.”

The call for proposals was closed on 18 September 2021, on the occasion of the G20 Agriculture Ministers Meeting held in Florence, Italy. A number of proposals involving around 40 countries across all regions have been submitted in response to this call. Proposals have been appraised based on their relevance, effectiveness, impact, and sustainability.

Acknowledging the Food Coalition as a flexible coordination mechanism to accelerate political, financial and technical support to countries most in need, the Matera Declaration “encourages partners and stakeholders to collaborate with or join the Food Coalition launched by FAO whose goal is to build a global alliance to trigger coordinated action in response to and recovery from the COVID-19”.
In this spirit and on the occasion of the G20 Joint Foreign Affairs and Development Ministers Meeting, the Food Coalition launched a call for proposals. Through this call, FAO invited its Members to join their efforts and build multi-stakeholder coalitions across countries and with non-State actors, who have a mutual interest in addressing concrete challenges on the ground as response to and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
