    Background

The agrifood system in the Mediterranean region faces several challenges, being a land extremely vulnerable to climate change and witnessing the constant struggle between quantity and quality of production and resources management. The erosion of the Mediterranean diet heritage is also alarming as it has undesirable impacts not only on health but also on the social, cultural, economic and environmental trends in the Mediterranean region.

    Objective

Strengthening capacities of local institutions and smallholder farmers to support agrifood systems transformation

This project aims to support the transformation of agrifood systems for rural prosperity through capacity development, scaling up innovative solutions adopting open innovation programmes and providing technical assistance to relevant local institutions and smallholder farmers in the Mediterranean area, with a strong focus on youth and women.

    Activities

To achieve its objective, the project will focus on the:

    • Identification of innovative and regenerative ideas in the food supply chains of the Mediterranean diet through the organization of an international award contest selecting "Innovative Ideas and Technologies in Agribusiness” with the aim to identify solutions that could lead to social, environmental, and economic benefits in the agriculture and agroindustry sectors.
    • Developing capacities of young farmers in the Mediterranean area to help them drive the ecological transition and develop resilient agrifood economies to sustain prosperous societies. Trainings will be delivered adopting the advanced learning program “Food & Climate Shapers” designed by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and the Future Food Institute (FFI).
    • Scaling up innovative solutions within the framework of Regenerative Agriculture and Agroecology in the Mediterranean area.
