Throughout World Forest Week, the Atrium will host a series of interactive and hands-on events that offer a rare chance to see, taste and touch some innovative products and tools, and to meet some of the experts and people on the ground who are driving change.

14.15-14.30 | FAO-IUFRO 75th anniversary celebrations
This ceremony celebrates the strong and longstanding relationship between FAO and the International Union of Forest Research Organizations which began in 1949, four years after FAO was established. With innovation in forestry now so crucial for solving global challenges, the two organizations will commit to enhancing their collaboration to scale up science-based innovation.

12.00-12.30 | Youth event: The bean to cup experience
Guided by Matteo Pavoni, Italian barista champion 2022 and co-founder of Peacocks Coffee, you can savour specialty, sustainably grown coffees at a pop-up coffee station in the Atrium while young experts explain how they are produced using agroforestry – agriculture with trees. Coffee will continue to be served after the event, until 17:00.

Meet a Minister from the Republic of Congo and a Director General from the Democratic Republic of Congo, along with FAO experts, as they explain how an innovative initiative by the Sustainable Wildlife Management Programme is helping to reform policies and legislation to strengthen wildlife management by Indigenous Peoples and rural communities.

See a live demonstration of FAO’s latest forest monitoring innovation developed to ensure smallholders remain market-accessible in the context of deforestation-related regulations. Whisp is for everyone along the commodity supply chain, from smallholders and operators, to governments and relevant authorities.

12.00-12.30 | Empowering women through beekeeping for sustainable rural livelihoods and regenerated forests
Meet Maria Shinini, a Maasai woman from Tanzania, who, with her community, has developed a flourishing honey business, with support from FAO-led Forest and Farm Facility. With improved beekeeping technology, tree planting and additional income in the community, the forests are regenerating.

Watch a bamboo master at work and try your hand at making something! In this hands-on workshop, bamboo master Xia Zheng from Sichuan, China, will be demonstrating how to turn freshly cut bamboo into a range of products such as cup-holders, trays and decorative screens. And she will guide volunteers to make some simple things themselves.
