Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition (FSN Forum)

The CFS, in its 40th session, requested the HLPE to prepare a report on Water and Food Security for its 42nd session in 2015. As part of its report elaboration process, the HLPE is launching an e-consultation to seek views, public and expert feedback and comments, on the following proposed scope and building blocks of the report, outlined below.

Rural women everywhere play a key role in supporting their households and communities in achieving food and nutrition security, generating income, and improving rural livelihoods and overall well-being. It's up to all of us to make sure that their role is well represented in the Post 2015 development agenda. How would you contribute?

Investing responsibly in agriculture is essential for reducing poverty, creating decent employment opportunities, enhancing food security and nutrition, and ensuring environmental sustainability. However, to achieve this, investments need to be responsible and specifically directed towards the achievement of benefits, while aiming at avoiding negative consequences. To address these needs, the CFS has launched a consultative process to develop principles for responsible agricultural investments (CFS-RAI). We welcome your feedback on the proposed set of principles.

Sub-Saharan Africa has the world’s fastest growing population and also the youngest. This is a huge opportunity for West Africa as young people bring energy, vivacity, and innovation into the work force and can consequently have a transformative impact on economic growth and social development. The agricultural sector plays a key role in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and represents up to 35% of the region’s Gross Domestic Product.  It is currently the employer of most of West Africans with 60% of the active population engaged in this sector.

In November 2012, the UN Committee on World Food Security (CFS) requested the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE) to conduct a study on Food Losses and Waste in the Context of Sustainable Food Systems. Final findings of the study will feed into CFS 41 Plenary session on policy convergence (October 2014).

As part of the process of elaboration of its reports, the HLPE now seeks inputs, suggestions, comments on the present V0 draft. This e-consultation will be used by the HLPE to further elaborate the report, which will then be submitted to external expert review, before finalization and approval by the HLPE Steering Committee.

Taking into account the results of the scoping consultation, the HLPE intends to assess the importance and relevance of Fisheries and Aquaculture for Food Security and nutrition as well as the current challenges faced by Fisheries and Aquaculture in relation to Food Security, pointing out changes going on, including overexploitation of fish stocks and the boom of aquaculture, in order to better understand these changes and to maximize the positive effects of them.

A two-day, face-to-face workshop, involving key FSN Forum members and FAO colleagues active in knowledge sharing was held in Rome (Italy) on 12-13 December 2013. The purpose was to allow for a constructive exchange of ideas aimed at gathering inputs for the continuous development of the Forum in general and for the upcoming medium term strategy in particular.

Following the recommendation of the 29th Session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI), FAO engaged in a consultative process to support the development of Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF). We would hence like to invite you to this e-consultation to share your experiences and views on how the SSF Guidelines could be implemented effectively following their adoption by the FAO Committee on Fisheries in June 2014.

The outcome of the e-consultation will provide inputs for the FAO Secretariat to draft a holistic and inclusive global assistance programme taking your lessons learnt, best practices, plans and expectations into account.

The FSN Forum Team is happy to inform you that the workshop “Toward a FSN Forum in West Africa” took place on 20-21 November 2013 in Accra, Ghana. Sharing knowledge and expertise on food security and nutrition is a key factor in the fight against hunger and malnutrition and the Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition (FSN Forum) contributes to this goal since 2007.

The FSN Forum in West Africa, a regional platform that help establish an effective dialogue between development stakeholders in the region, launches its first online discussion! The first discussion tackles opportunities and challenges of social protection for improved food security and nutrition in West Africa. We invite you to share experience, knowledge and way forward of social protection programmes in the region.
