El proyecto RIGA utiliza datos de encuestas a nivel hogar para evaluar la importancia relativa y la naturaleza de las actividades generadoras de ingreso para informar a los responsables implicados en el diseño de los programas y políticas de desarrollo rural y agrícola. El proyecto pretende ayudar a la comunidad del desarrollo internacional a elaborar generalizaciones con base empírica sobre la economía rural e identificar instrumentos normativos que promuevan las actividades no agrícolas junto a las agrícolas de forma que se facilite la mitigación de la pobreza.

Promover la inclusión de las personas con discapacidad en los programas y políticas de desarrollo agrícola y seguridad alimentaria
Durante décadas el movimiento internacional a favor de los discapacitados ha afirmado que la discapacidad es una causa de la pobreza, que a menudo ésta conduce a la discapacidad y que las personas discapacitadas están entre las más pobres de cualquier país. Los cálculos del Banco Mundial sugieren que 1 de cada 10 personas en el mundo tiene una discapacidad y que el 80 por ciento de ellas se encuentran en países en desarrollo.

En octubre de 2010, el recién reformado Comité de Seguridad Alimentaria Mundial (CFS, por sus siglas en inglés) de Naciones Unidas solicitó a su Grupo de Alto Nivel de Expertos en Seguridad Alimentaria y Nutrición (HLPE, por sus siglas en inglés) llevar a cabo un estudio sobre la protección social, y en particular evaluar “maneras de disminuir la vulnerabilidad mediante redes de seguridad, programas y políticas sociales y productivas respecto de la seguridad alimentaria y nutricional, teniendo en cuenta las diferentes condiciones reinantes en los distintos países y regiones.
