Call for submissions

Call for experiences, best practices and scalable solutions for the integration of biodiversity into agriculture

Biodiversity is the cornerstone of sustainable production and food security. It contributes to the health of ecosystems, the sustainability of food production and the resilience of livelihoods. The agricultural sector - plant and animal production, fisheries, aquaculture, and forestry - depends on biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides, but it is also the sector with the greatest influence on biodiversity.

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework adopted in December 2022 sets the course for global biodiversity action over the next six years and beyond. It includes 23 targets to achieve by 2030, several of which specifically concern the agricultural sector. Its implementation will require the involvement of stakeholders in the agricultural sector.

This challenge will be the subject of the International Symposium "Agriculture, Biodiversity and Food Security: From Commitments to Actions", to be held in Quebec City, Canada, from April 30 to May 2, 2024.[1] The Symposium will discuss technical recommendations to facilitate the agricultural sector's commitment to achieving sector-relevant targets. These recommendations will build on efforts already underway to integrate biodiversity into agriculture, and will take into account the opportunities, constraints, and challenges, for food producers and all other stakeholders, that need to be addressed to better integrate biodiversity into agriculture.

Through this call for submissions, the steering committee of the Symposium and its co-chairs are inviting stakeholders to submit contributions on experiences and best practices, and concrete, scalable solutions concerning biodiversity and agriculture, in order to inform the Symposium and facilitate the development of recommendations.

A first version of the recommendations (Zero Draft) serves as a reference for completing the template for submissions.

The call is open until 18 March 2024.

Dear Madam

Herewith I am submitting template on best practices and scalable solutions for the integration of biodiversity into agriculture to consider to present at international Symposium "Agriculture, Biodiversity and Food Security: From Commitments to Actions to be held on to be held in Quebec City, Canada, from April 30 to May 2, 2024

Thank you best regards

President Mihimandala Organic  welfare  farmer organization

A successful partnership between the University of Reading, UK, the M S Swaminathan Reserach Foundation India, and a network of small holder famers in the Southern Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, saw us co-design ecological interventions in rice, okra, mango and moringa fields in. All interventions (including lentils, sunflowers and sesame) were co-developed with smallholder farmers to ensure context specific floral resources to boost beneficial biodiversity including natural enemies of pests and insect pollinators. These in turn contributed to enhanced ecosystem services, better yield and quality of produce and improved livelihoods. The interventions also provided co-benefits in the form of added income or by meeting household nutritional needs. These practices are now being adopted further by farming communities in the wider countryside through peer to peer sharing of knowledge and good practice. Dear Steering Committee, Co-Chairs, and Facilitators,

Green Greetings from Universal Versatile Society an organization in accreditation with UNEP, UNCCD and with a special consultative status with UN ECOSOC.

We are working in Vidarbha region of India which is proclaimed as farmers suicide prone region. With a target to solve the farmer's issues, the project 'Socio-Economic Initiative for Ecological Agrifood Production and Consumption' has been developed by considering all the aspect of nature based farming. Remarkably this project is a social initiative under which farmers may unite to produce and market together for their benefits.

Please have a look on attached file for your kind perusal.

Thanks and Regards,
Narayan Solanke,

Dear Steering Committee, Co-Chairs, and Facilitators,

Boomitra is pleased to present its submission titled "Biodiversity Preservation & Enhancement via Carbon Farming."

Our multi-country program focuses on scaling biodiversity enhancement among Smallholder Farmers (SHFs) through Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES). Leveraging cutting-edge technologies, we prioritize inclusivity, aiming to reach even the most remote farmers.

Our goal is to establish a robust and scalable model applicable across countries and diverse cropping systems, always prioritizing a farmer-first approach.

Hello,

Attached  is our  contribution to biodiversity call.

with kind regards

Dear Steering Committee, Co-Chairs and Facilitators,

We are pleased to submit our submission, "Co-designing and scaling sustainable agricultural systems for biodiversity enhancement, climate change mitigation and peacebuilding in Colombia."

The initiative focused on designing and scaling sustainable agricultural interventions to reduce deforestation and promote peace in Colombia while enhancing biodiversity in production systems. Sustainable Land Use Systems (SLUS) were co-developed, incorporating practices at farm, landscape, and value chain levels. The project aimed to create sustainable rural livelihoods in post-conflict areas, combining research with stakeholder engagement to tailor interventions to smallholder producers and create enabling environments for scaling.

Kind regards,

Janelle Sylvester

Dear Steering Committee, Co-chairs, and Facilitators,

Please find attached our submission for the call titled "Optimizing access by producers to existing green finance toward biodiversity conservation."

In Colombia, smallholder farmers face barriers to adopting sustainable practices due to limited financial resources. Our initiative aims to address this challenge by optimizing access to existing green finance mechanisms. We are collaborating with the government to adjust tax incentive policies, mobilize funding for nature-based solutions, and build capacity for regulatory harmonization. Additionally, we are working with cocoa producers' organizations to structure projects eligible for funding.

Kind regards,

Janelle Sylvester

Dear Moderator,

Attached is our response "Supporting small and marginal farmers, sharecroppers and agricultural workers to secure food security and protect biodiversity " for the call of experiences on integration of biodiversity into agriculture.
